Intimacy is a caring relationship without pretense, revelation without risk of loss or gain by one or the other. It is giving and receiving, an exchange that enhances because it facilitates the awareness of selves, of their differences and sameness. It is discriminational, encouraging disclosure and elaboration of the many facets of each person. It creates and sustains belonging, while appreciating each individual's uniqueness. Intimacy encourages continuity. It allows us to belong in the present and with those who came before and those who come after.
The above definition is protracted - however if you evaluate each part - it can become a map for the discussion of the real meaning of intimacy. You do not have to agree with every part of the definition -- discuss your disagreements and your agreements.
